LIVING ON AN ISLAND
Sixty-percent of Sanibel island is a Preserve. Even after hurricane Ian, our Island continues as a wildlife sanctuary.
We have a front row seat to the benefit of water and mangroves. As much as the mangroves function as a nursery for wildlife, they also provide protection from high winds. Last summer, we stood on our veranda listening to the violent winds and not so much as a hair on our heads moved. After Ian, our house continues to stand. Mangroves and Buttonwoods are windscreens and the reason why most houses survived Ian.
High winds will knock over a pine tree with as little as 50mph winds. The Mangroves and Buttonwoods continue to stand after 150mph winds delivered by hurricane Ian. Their purpose is life supporting.
