The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Battlefield Trust have their traveling exhibition at the Sydney & Berne Davis Art Center April 4th through April 26, 2025.
My piece titled, “Liberty” 40” x 30”, oil and Galkyd on canvas, is on display. The piece is symbolism and is accompanied with my writing:
“Our story begins, as most do, with a series of events when taken collectively, necessitate a decision.
That decision has a process of its own and left to the physical world as the source of wisdom, the outcome is without guidance. The abstraction of people huddled, at first not together, assessing privately, worldly considerations over worldly events. Left at this state, stagnation would be the result.
Streams of color flowing from the dove above offers the path to liberty. Whether or not that path is chosen remains a personal choice. The streams of color reach the huddled masses and those read to receive will know the best decision and the responsibilities that will be laid upon them. There will be no turning back.
The dove soars above and supported by the lamb, an image that emerged very much on its own and when it was shown to me, I defined the outline to reveal the source.
Still, decisions need to be made, first individual and then collective. Following the imagery clockwise we see the abandoned wooden plow representing the initial worldly sacrifices for liberty. The abandoned plow sits without a master as there was no standing army and this revolution was to be fueled by the collective strength of each person to see it through, knowing that there was no turning back.
The altar cloth ties all of the symbols together and turns to water for the early emotions and considerations and then put to rest, replaced by the individual choice, a call to arms.
Our ancestors knew the bible and James 1: 5 gives the reason for why we need the Bible. Without the Bible, the Constitution could not be written as it begins with, “We the People” and is the original book letting us know that we are all of God’s children, so placed in the center of this painting.
This document formed a nation from the worldly view of impossible as many considered themselves to be Brits even referring to the red coats as the Regulars, to amassing collective agreement, in order to birth a new nation. Divine inspiration has only one source. The pen quill rests. “
